A treat for Bharatanatyam lovers

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Bharatanatyam lovers were on Tuesday treated to rare performances by Padma Subramaniam, Shubha Dhananjay and Vasundhara Doraiswamy at the Bengalooru Habba.

Shubha Dhananjay, an exponent of the Tanjore style of the art and a trained Kathak dancer, began with Perini Nritya, traditionally performed on a mud pot.

Her troupe performed to Haalu Halla to mark Suvarna Karnataka.

Vasundhara Doraiswamy performed to the songs of D.V. Gundappa, presenting a dramatic hour-long ballet based on his "Antapura Geete."

Visitors to Kannada Bhavan, hoping to hear vocalist Smitha Bellur, were surprised to be treated instead to a veena recital by young artiste Sahana.

Chowdiah Hall was filled to capacity for veteran danseuse Padma Subramaniam's performance.

Chitrakala Parishat hosted an exhibition organised by the Crafts Council of Karnataka of products that range from bags, silk bedspreads, string puppets, to intricate woodcuts and paintings.

Craft from around the country showcased in 25 stalls included the Bhoota ritual masks and brass metal of Medinipore to Kalamkari products from Kalahasthi.

The exhibition included educational toys and traditional games such as "The battle of Lanka," "Aadu Puli Aatam" and "Ashtaa Chemmaa," to meet children's educational needs.
