This Day That Age
India won the Olympic hockey title for the sixth successive time, by defeating Pakistan in the final by a solitary goal in Melbourne on December 6. Gentle, India's left-back, converted a short corner hit two minutes after the interval. India went through the tournament without conceding a single goal. They notched a total of 38 goals. India beat Afghanistan 14-0, US 16-0, Singapore 6-0 and Germany 1-0. India, who won the title in 1928 (the year of their Olympic debut), defended it at Los Angeles (1932), Berlin (1936) Wembley (1948) and Helsinki (1952). India's Captain Balbir Singh received the gold medal from the Chairman of the International Olympic Committee.
