Indian Bank reigns supreme

Madurai: Indian Bank, Chennai won the men's title and lifted the Madurai Depnty Mayor Chinnasamy Memorial Cup, defeating its arch-rival Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22 in the final of the Tamil Nadu State Senior Volleyball Championship organised by Madurai District Volleyball Association here on Tuesday night

For Indian Bank, Saikrishnan and Kalaivanan spiked with success to the fine settings of Yoganandan, while spikers Sivabalan and Natarajan were equally good for IOB. Thulsi Reddy, with his intelligent settings controlled the team. However, Indian Bank had the final say in most of the rallies.

The first set was a neck-to-neck fight from the start till 20-all from where Kalaivanan's powerful smashes found no answer and Indian Bank took the set at 25-22.

In the second, apart from spiking, Indian Bank's net-blocks, especially by Umarajan and Yoganandan, helped the team to take a 15-9 lead and from there the team never looked back.

In the third, IOB managed a 18-12 lead and kept the lead to take the set at 25-19. The fourth set saw the teams fighting tooth and nail, but towards the end three fine drops by Naveen helped Indian Bank chinch the issue at 25-22.

Lotus triumphs

In the women's section, brilliant spiking by Mohana and Nandhini helped Lotus Volleyball Club, Thadagam (Coimbatore) dethrone G.K.M. Foundation, Kanchipuram 25-21, 25-17, 26-24 and lift the cup.

Other results:

Third place: Men: SDAT Excellence, Chennai bt Nethaji Sports Club, Nanganallur 25-17, 25-16. Women: Dr. Sivanthi VBC, Chennai bt Armed Police, Chennai 25-18, 25-13.

Manipur wins title

Manipur University retained the title defeating Guru Nanak Dev University Ansitsar 3-0 in the last match of the semifinal round robin league in the All India inter-university football tournament for women organised by Alagappa University at Umayal Stadium, Karaikudi on Wednesday.

Manipur, which topped the league table with 7 points to emerge winner, was awarded Alagappa University Trophy. Kuruhshetra University, which lost to Punjab University 0-1 in another match, finished runner-up with 4 points. Punjab University, with its only win (3points) tied for the third place with Guru Nanak Dev University, which also had got 3 points. However Punjab was placed third on more goals scored, as the difference of goals also were same between them.

The results: Manipur 3 (Sanathoi Thanu, Sakhitombi Devi, Irani Devi) bt Guru Nanak Dev 0; Punajb 2 (Mandeep Kaur, Manjit Kaur) bt Kuruhshetra 1 (Renu).
