6 die in avalanches
Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR:
Six persons, including three soldiers, have died in avalanches in Uri and Tangdhar. Due to heavy rain and snow the Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for the second day on Wednesday.
Col. Hemant Juneja, spokesman for Army's 15 Corps headquarters, told The Hindu that four soldiers were on patrol duty at one of the posts in Bijhama area in the Uri sector when a snow slide hit the area. ``By the time help reached there, three of our men had died. A fourth was removed to a hospital," he said.
In Tangdhar, three labourers working with the Border Roads Organisation to clear snow died in an avalanche at Sadna Pass, which connects Tangdhar with the rest of the Valley.
