LIC athletic meet begins today

VIJAYAWADA: The two-day Life Insurance Corporation's 40th South Central Zonal Athletic Meet will begin on Thursday at Makineni Basavapunnaiah Stadium at Singhnagar in which 67 athletes from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka will take part.

Speaking to newsmen, N.N. Srihari, member of the organising committee, said here on Wednesday that several national and international athletes would be seen in action.

"M.V. Nagendra Prasad, a sports recruit from Mysore, who won the gold medal in SAAF games, will take part in high jump. Similarly, Udipi's Lalitha Jayaram and Padmanabha Bhandi, who participated in the 16th World Maters athletic meet at Sansabastin (Spain) will be seen in action," he added. He said the South Central Zone contingent to take part in the national-level meet to be held at Bhopal from January 8 to 12 would be selected on the concluding day of the meet.
