NEW DELHI: Sriram Jha defeated fellow International Master R. Balasubramanium to join Rahul Shetty in the lead at eight points after nine rounds of the Subroto Mukherjee memorial international rating chess tournament at Subroto Park here on Wednesday. With two rounds to go, the victorious duo of Prakash Ram and Sriram Sarja followed the leaders at 7.5 points. In the biggest surprise of the day, Railwayman Nassir Wajih delivered a crushing blow to top seed Deepan Chakkravarthy's recovery act by inflicting a defeat. A third loss this week is sure to dent Deepan's confidence ahead of the National `A' championship beginning at Valsad on December 18. Similarly, Chennai-based IM Varugeese Koshy's struggle continued after being held by Santosh Sinha. The results (ninth round): Rahul Shetty (8) drew with Arghyadip Das (7); R. Balasubramanium (6.5) lost to Sriram Jha (8); Sriram Sarja (7.5) bt Harish Sharma (6.5); Vipul Subhashi (6.5) lost to Prakash Ram (7.5); P.
