Normalisation method to equate marks

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Government will adopt the normalisation method to equate marks obtained by students in relevant subjects in the qualifying examination conducted by various boards or authority for the purpose of preparing a common merit list for admission to professional colleges in the State.

Explaining the new admission procedure, Minister for Higher Education K. Ponmudi told the Assembly on Wednesday that under the method, the highest mark obtained by students of various boards in each subject would be equated to the highest mark obtained by students of the State Board in that subject and the relative marks obtained by other students in that subject would be determined accordingly.

For example, if the highest mark secured by students of State board in physics is 100 and the highest mark secured by students of any other board in the same subject is 90, then both the highest marks will be considered to be equal to 100.

If a student of other board secures 60 marks in physics when the highest mark in the same board is 90, then the student's mark will be considered to be equal to 66.66 per cent (100 multiplied by 60 and then divided by 90).

After normalisation of marks in relevant subjects in the qualifying examination conducted by different boards, the qualifying students of different boards will be merged into a common merit list.

In cases where more than one student secures the same marks in the common merit list, the inter-se merit among such students will be determined in such manner as may be prescribed.
