Welcome verdict

The Supreme Court verdict holding unconstitutional the Foreigners (Tribunals for Assam) Order, 2006 — brought in to cover up non-implementation of the Court's directive striking down the Illegal Migrants Act — is welcome. It has re-emphasised the urgent need to deal with illegal immigration, a longstanding legitimate demand of the people of Assam. It reinforces the fact that the Constitution with its in-built checks and balances is relevant.

Tituraj Kashyap,
New Delhi

As pointed out by the Court, it is important to preserve the demographic balance and national security. The Centre's policies have alienated large sections of Assam leading to many avoidable agitations. Why should Assam be the subject of special legislation, which is not operative in other parts of India? Tribunals should be established to deal with illegal immigrants not just in Assam but in other parts of the country as well.

H.N. Ramakrishna,
Bangalore
