N. Dharam Singh
Bangalore: Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh on Wednesday criticised Assembly Speaker Krishna for not nominating D.K. Shivakumar and A. Krishnappa, MLAs, as recommended by the Congress on the House Committee to probe the land scams around Bangalore. Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Singh alleged that the Speaker was conniving with the ruling party to get a report from it suited to its political needs. Mr. Singh said that Congress MLAs S.S. Patil, B. Shivaram and Vivek Kulkarni, who were members of the committee, had resigned as per the directive of the party. They were replaced by three former ministers Ramalinga Reddy, D.K. Shivakumar and A. Krishnappa, MLAs. The Committee is headed by Janata Dal (Secular) MLA A.T. Ramaswamy. Mr. Singh said Congress leaders including himself had reminded the Speaker to nominate the above three members and asked him that the committee should withhold its function until its composition was complete. Mr. Singh alleged that the Speaker had gone ahead with nominating members including Mr. Reddy on the committee, leaving the other two at the behest of the ruling party. Mr. Singh alleged that the committee was planning to submit an interim report to the Speaker on the land scams, which would suit the political needs of the Janata Dal (Secular). He said that it is highly objectionable and unfortunate that the Speaker was making efforts to cause dissentions in the Congress. Mr. Singh said the Congress was not afraid of any inquiry into the land scams, however, it would not stall the proceedings of the committee and boycott it. He said the Congress members have been advised to quit the panel to protest against the partisan manner in which the Speaker was functioning. He said the Congress would move a no-confidence motion against the Speaker in the next available opportunity for his alleged misconduct. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge, Ramesh Kumar, Mr. Shivakumar and Mr. Reddy and R.V. Deshpande, MLAs, were present.
