ANANTAPUR: Dalita Sangheebhava Smithi staged `satyagraha' near the statue of B.R. Ambedkar here on Wednesday protesting the recent spurt in the attacks and atrocities against Dalits across the country. The `satyagraha' was organised to mark the death anniversary of Ambedkar. Speaking at the programme Congress legislator (Singanamala) S. Sailajanath alleged that the Governments were not responding to the atrocities against Dalits. He termed the incident of killing four Dalits in Maharashtra two months ago by members of a landlord's family after raping a woman and her daughter as inhuman. A fact finding committee had found the landlord's family guilty of killing the Dalits and the State Government of not taking any action. The MLA demanded severe punishment to the landlord's family.Dharna staged In another protest programme, Andhra Pradesh Dalita Hakkula Porata Samithi (APDHPS) staged a dharna in front of the collectorate alleging neglect of Dalits' rights and inaction on attacks and atrocities against them. Leaders of the CPI and the Samithi garlanded the statute of Ambedkar and took out a procession, earlier. Speaking at the dharna samithi leaders -- M.D. Sanjeevappa and S. Bala Peddanna alleged that welfare schemes meant for Dalits were not reaching a majority of them. On the other hand, attacks and atrocities on them were continuing unabated in the absence of pursuance of cases filed on the incidents. They demanded severe action against the landlords who had killed the Dalits in Maharashtra. They also demanded reservation for them in the private sector, contract jobs and exemption of creamy layer in SC and ST quota.
