"Keep tainted candidates out of polls"

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: The law should be changed to ensure that persons with a criminal record are kept out of the electoral arena, Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said here on Wednesday.

Political parties must scrutinise the background of candidates before issuing the ticket, he told journalists at Srirangam here after visiting the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple.

Mr. Kumaraswamy made these suggestions when his views were sought on the award of life sentence to the former Union Minister, Shibu Soren in a murder case.

On the demand by the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party for dismissing the Mulayam Singh Government in Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Kumaraswamy said his personal opinion was that it was not good to dismiss the Government.

People were the masters and we must accept their verdict, he said.
