More power subsidy for farmers

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government will provide an additional subsidy of Rs.715.43 crores over 36 months to agricultural consumers of electricity thereby obviating the need to impose any additional burden on them for past recoveries.

An official spokesman said here on Wednesday that the decision was taken in the wake of an order of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission for recovery of various costs pertaining to the period from 2002-03 to 2006-07. The total liability had been assessed by the Commission at Rs.1976.07 crores, of which Rs.715.43 crores pertained to the agriculture sector.

He added that Rs.319.16 crores would be collected from domestic consumers and Rs.941.47 crores from other categories of consumers over the next 36 months. In the case of domestic users consuming power up to 40 units per month, the impact per unit (KWH) of energy sale would be 13 paise; it would be 30 paise for those consuming 41 to 300 units and 40 paise for those consuming over 300 units per month.

In the case of non-domestic consumers, the impact per unit of energy sale would be 39 paise; it would be 40 paise for L.T. industry category. In the case of minor irrigation and tube wells, lift irrigation, public water works and railway traction, the impact per unit of energy sale would be 37 paise.

Similarly, in the case of street lighting supply, H.T. industry and bulk supply, the impact per unit would be 38 paise per unit of energy sold.

The spokesman claimed that this additional collection would inject additional funds into the Power Utilities whose financial position at present was not very satisfactory.
