PROUD MOMENT: Governor Rameshwar Thakur presenting `BM Birla Lifetime Achievement Award' to Nobel Laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji in Hyderabad on Wednesday.
HYDERABAD: Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Wednesday presented the `Lifetime Achievement in Science Award' instituted by B.M. Birla Science Centre to Nobel Laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, a French physicist, who won the prize in 1997 for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser lights. Prof. Tannoudji shared the Nobel with Steven Chu and William Daniel Phillips. Presenting the award, the Governor lauded the Birla Science Centre for instituting the award and providing an opportunity for students to listen to some "great minds". Talking to reporters before receiving the award, the Nobel Laureate said science should be taught as a `fascinating adventure' to children from the age of five in a `hands-on' mode to inculcate interest.
`More science needed'
Modern society needed scientists and engineers and more science was needed to solve `big problems' facing the world. On meeting growing energy needs, Prof. Tannoudji said he supported nuclear energy, adding "we have to find new sources". He delivered the B M Birla Memorial Lecture on "Manipulating Atoms with Light."
