Move to shift Tobacco Board opposed

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has opposed the reported move to shift the Tobacco Board office from Guntur to somewhere in Karnataka, saying that coupled with plans to de-regulate tobacco growing and trade, it would put farmers at the mercy of middlemen and exporters.

At a press conference on Wednesday, TDP leader Ummareddy Venkateswarlu said de-regulation would push farmers into a crisis.

"During the TDP regime, then Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu convened regular meetings with exporters and the board to get the best deal for farmers", he said, regretting that the Centre was not thinking of farmers growing a commercial crop which earned over US $ 350 million in foreign exchange.

Another talk doing the rounds, he said, was to ensure that no IAS officer connected with Andhra Pradesh or belonging to the cadre was posted as chairman of the board.
