Panchayat presidents put off stir plan

Special Correspondent

Puducherry: The Federation of Village Panchayat Presidents of Puducherry district has put off its plan to hold a bandh in Puducherry and Karaikal on December 12 to urge the Government to devolve powers to panchayats.

A spokesman of the federation told The Hindu here on Wednesday that a joint meeting of the federation members held earlier in the day at Karikalambakkam took the decision to postpone the bandh plan.

The federation expected that the Government would take a decision on devolving powers to panchayats through necessary legislative measures in the coming winter session of Assembly on December 15.

The spokesman said that the federation also considered the pleas made by the ruling Congress and its allies and the efforts made by the Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary Party leader M. Ramadoss that no steps would be spared to procure powers to the newly elected civic bodies.
