TIRUCHI: While residents of Thuraiyur seem to take the speculation regarding transfer of the taluk from Tiruchi to Perambalur district seriously, official circles feel there is a very slim chance of such an eventuality, at least until the exercise of delimitation of constituencies is over. Residents of Thuraiyur have called for a bandh on December 7 in the town to protest the move. Official sources say that any transfer or change in `administrative units' has been prohibited until the delimitation exercise is complete. This also accounts for the delay in the actual formation of the Ariyalur district, though the Government has announced its decision to bifurcate Perambalur district, sources say. The transfer of Uppiliyapuram Assembly segment, in effect the entire Thuraiyur taluk, to Perambalur district was mooted a few years back. The move was reportedly backed by the Union Minister for Environment and Forest, A.Raja, who represents the Perambalur Lok Sabha constituency. The Uppiliyapuram Assembly segment falls under this constituency, though it is under the administrative jurisdiction of Tiruchi district. With the delimitation process yet to go a long way, the transfer of taluk cannot be done immediately. Already the initial proposals drawn up for reorganisation of the Assembly constituencies in Tiruchi district have kicked up a row. Almost all the political parties were taken aback by the large-scale changes proposed in the reorganisation exercise without taking into account the geographical contiguity. For instance, parts of Tiruchi are to be attached under a proposed Manachanallur constituency. However, the district officials have suggested some changes and put forward the proposals, which have to be considered by the Delimitation Commission.
