CHENNAI : Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital in Nungambakkam has introduced 24-hour paediatric trauma care service to cater to children in need of emergency care. Those who want to use the service can call the hospital at 2828 4444. National award-winning actor Vikram formally inaugurated the service at a function in the hospital situated on Nageswara Road in Nungambakkam on Wednesday. R. Sankar, consultant orthopaedic surgeon in the hospital, pointed out in his presentation on the need for the trauma service that 339 children had died in trauma cases in Chennai so far this year. "According to studies conducted in Western countries, nearly 50 per cent of all trauma victims can be saved if the appropriate attention is given at the appropriate time. Paediatric trauma cases are unlike adult trauma cases and require specialised attention," he added. The paediatric cases reported in India were different from the cases reported in the western countries. Dr.Sankar pointed out that high velocity vehicular accidents resulted in several trauma victims there but in India the most common cause was head injuries sustained in fall. "Since the CHILDS Trust is the only multi-disciplinary tertiary referral hospital devoted to child care, we thought it would be best to start a trauma care unit here." As part of emergency trauma service, the facilities available include emergency department headed by a senior consultant with dedicated junior staff and doctors in both medical and surgical specialities , fully equipped paediatric intensive care unit, operation theatres available round the clock, dedicated burns unit with a plastic surgeon, laboratory and blood bank services, and an ambulance service operated by trained personnel. Mr.Vikram cheered the children admitted in various wards after the inauguration of the trauma care centre. He recollected his own experience after being involved in a road accident and commended the doctors for the initiative.
