Proposal sought for two food parks

Staff Reporter

Rs. 2,700-crore package to address problems of farmers sanctioned

  • Six food parks planned by the State Government will also come up
  • Farmers' Day to be celebrated later this month

BANGALORE: The State Government, which had wanted to set up four mega food parks mainly in North Karnataka, has been invited to send proposals for two such parks by the Union Government, Minister for Agriculture Bandeppa Kashempur said here on Tuesday.

He told presspersons that six food parks planned by the State Government would also come up. Plans have been in the pipeline for over a year to set up these food parks in a joint venture at Jewargi, Halga, Bagalkot, Malur, Maddur, and Chitradurga.

The infrastructure needed for the food processing industries would be set up at these parks, and the industries would be invited to set up their units, he said.

The mega food park is a Union Government scheme, and the State Government had wanted to set up four of them, though only two have been sanctioned for the present.

Mr. Kashempur said the Union Government has sanctioned a Rs. 2,700-crore package to the State to address the problems of farmers, along the lines of the package announced a few months ago for farmers of Vidarbha in Maharashtra after suicides by farmers touched alarming levels.

The Government is in the process of allocating these funds for various purposes over the next three years.
