PIL petition highlights the bad condition of roads in the district

CHENNAI:
The Madras High Court has summoned the Nilgiris Collector and the Chief Engineer of the State Highways Department in connection with a public interest litigation petition highlighting the deplorable condition of roads in the district.
The First Bench of Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru ordered notices and directed the officials to be present in the court on December 11 when the matter will come up for hearing.
The petition, filed by Nilgiris Bar Association president K. Chandramohan, said the deplorable condition of roads in the district, and of those leading to the district, was driving tourists away.
S. Prabakaran, counsel for the petitioner-association, submitted that though a huge toll was collected from vehicles at Burliar, Kunjappanai, Nadugani and Theppakkadu, the amount was not spent on road maintenance. Almost all vehicles enter Udhagamandalam through the Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Mysore road, a State Highway. He alleged that no proper road had been laid in the ghat section for over 10 years. The petitioner said the writ plea was moved after a resolution passed by a large number of tourism associations.
