High Court summons officials over monkey menace

DDA, MCD, NDMC chiefs asked to appear in person

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday summoned the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Chairman and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Vice-Chairman to apprise it about the measures they had taken to fight the monkey menace in the Capital.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice G.S. Cistani asked the three officials to appear in person before the Court on January 10, 2007.

The directions came on a pending public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Meira Bhatia.

Earlier, counsel for the Delhi Government submitted that the Capital has just one monkey centre to keep monkeys caught from public places and at present it was packed.

The petitioner has sought directions for implementation of an earlier order of the High Court asking the authorities concerned to check the monkey menace in the city.

Ms. Bhatia submitted that despite several judicial directions issued to the respondents to take steps to rid the city of the menace by this Court over the years, they had failed to take any action.

She further submitted that the menace had been increasing by the day as the population of monkeys had grown in the city.

"We hope that the compliance with the directions by the respondents shall eradicate or at least minimise the problem of stray dogs, stray cattle and monkeys, " the High Court had said while disposing of a public interest litigation regarding the matter in 2002.
