Government rethink on airport expansion project

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI : Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday said that the State Government was contemplating shifting the Chennai Airport expansion project to a place far away from Pozhichalur and Cowl Bazar in Kancheepuram district.

Responding to leader of the CPI V. Sivapunniam's remark that residents of Pozhichalur and Cowl Bazar feared that they would be displaced if the project came up in their area, Mr. Karunanidhi said though some sections of people might be affected while implementing major projects, the Government was keen to ensure that the interest of the poor and downtrodden were protected.

Some middlemen had been spreading scare among the people, he said, appealing to Members and the public not to give credence to such reports.

Mr. Sivapunniam, who raised the issue, said locals feared that over 4, 200 houses and places of worship would be demolished if the expansion project was implemented in a site covering Pozhichalur and Cowl Bazar.
