CHENNAI: `Remember Shakti', a fusion music concert, organised by Pancham Nishad in association with Zakir Hussain promotions will be on at Kamarajar Arangam on Thursday evening. Addressing mediapersons, John McLaughlin, guitarist, said that `Remember Shakti' was an extension of the original thematic programme called `Shakti'. Besides McLaughlin, the band has percussionist Ustad Zakir Hussain on the tabla and drums, U. Shrinivas on the mandolin, V. Selvaganesh playing the kanjira, and Shankar Mahadevan on the vocals. The group, which was formed in the mid 1970s as `Remember Shakti', has a fan following across the globe, said Shashi Vyas, Director, Pancham Nishad. Starting from Chennai the group will perform in four other cities Mumbai on December 9, Pune on December 10, Bangalore on December 13, and Goa on December 15. John McLaughlin's `Mahavishnu Orchestra' was an electric band that established fusion as a new and growing style within the jazz and rock worlds. After the band split McLaughlin worked with a low-key acoustic group called `Shakti'. This group combined Indian music with elements of jazz. Mandolin U. Shrinivas said that performing for `Remember Shakti' at the Music Academy in 2003 was an unforgettable experience. "John is to jazz as Semmangudi is to Carnatic music," he said. Mandolin U. Shrinivas added that he felt blessed and honoured to be a part of the performance. Shankar Mahadevan said that the music from this team had a positive vibration, and was unmatched in quality. The event is being sponsored by Nokia, Tata Safari, Orra and Big 92.7 FM. The hospitality sponsors are Taj Coromandel and Taj Connemara.
