BJP manipulating evidence, says Dasmunsi

NEW DELHI: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi on Wednesday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership for ``manipulating evidence'' to ``delay justice'' in the Babri Masjid demolition case and hinted that no further extension would be given to the Liberhans Commission.

``We want the culprits [of December 6, 1992 demolition] brought to justice.'' The United Progressive Alliance Government extended the commission's term, which would now end on December 31, 2006. "We hope the commission would complete its report by then,'' he said here.

Then and now

Referring to the disturbances in Parliament earlier in the day, he said a number of BJP members had come to the House with placards, which read Mandir wahin banayenge, and resorted to slogan shouting.

But during the formation of the NDA, and before and after the NDA came to power in 1998, the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, solemnly promised the nation that it would abide by the judicial verdict in the main title suit in the Ayodhya case.

``Today what they said and demonstrated in the House were a total negation of the collective declaration of the NDA." Mr. Dasmunsi challenged Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani to "tell the nation where the BJP and the NDA stood. Let him tell the country that his party will not abide by the judicial verdict."

The Minister said he had spoken to some MPs of the Janata Dal (United) and the Biju Janata Dal and they told him: ``We are not with the BJP on this [the Ayodhya issue]."

(Separately, JD (U) president Sharad Yadav told The Hindu : "The NDA made its stand clear, we are for a negotiated settlement or a judicial verdict binding on all parties.")

Mr. Dasmunsi pointed out that on December 7, 1992, day after the demolition, BJP leaders expressed ``regret'' and described the act as ``unfortunate.''

But now they brazenly displayed their desire to build the temple at the disputed site even though the case was before court.
