Gutted in fire

NEW DELHI: Nearly 100 jhuggis were gutted in a fire that broke out in a jhuggi-jhonpri cluster at Bawana in North-West Delhi on Wednesday afternoon. Luckily there were no causalities.

Fourteen fire tenders were rushed to the spot after the fire department received a call around 1 p.m., fire brigade officials said. Fire fighters took over two hours to put out the blaze.

Held for robbery cases

NEW DELHI: Four young men allegedly involved in several cases of robbery and chain snatching have been arrested by the South Delhi police.

According to the police, one of the accused, Sanjay, is reportedly a drug addict and has been involved in seven cases of theft, robbery and Arms Act. A camera and mobile phone have been reportedly recovered from their possession.

Auto lifters nabbed

NEW DELHI: Two alleged auto-lifters involved in over 30 cases of vehicle theft were arrested in Saket on Tuesday evening. Six motorcycles stolen from various parts of Delhi and Gurgaon in Haryana and two car stereos were recovered from their possession, the police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid near Lado Sarai in Saket and two men in a motorcycle were intercepted. On seeing the police, the duo allegedly tried to flee but was overpowered.

Gang busted

NEW DELHI: A gang of alleged inter-State truck-jackers has been busted by the South Delhi police with the arrest of four persons, including two Bangladeshi nationals.

While investigating some cases of truck theft in Badarpur and Mehruali, the police found that some criminals, hailing from Mewat and Bangladesh, were involved. The inputs were further developed and four persons -- Asgar, Arshad, Haleem and Mohammad Alam -- were arrested near Rajiv Park in Badarpur on Wednesday. The police claimed to have solved five cases of vehicle theft and burglaries with the arrest. Efforts are on to nab the leader of the gang, Zakir alias Mota.

`Robbers' arrested

NEW DELHI: Six persons allegedly involved in several highway robberies have been arrested at Mehrauli in South Delhi.

The accused, identified as Vijay, Rajkumar, Ram Niwas, Naim Khan, Kanhaiya and Mohammad Hanif Abbas, were reportedly involved in robbery cases at Badarpur, Defence Colony, Sarita Vihar and Sriniwaspuri. They also allegedly committed thefts along the railway line near Mathura Road as they were well conversant with the topography of the area.

Apology sought

NEW DELHI: The All-India Passport Employees' Association at a general body meeting here has criticised the attitude of a senior passport official towards the staff and decided to lodge a protest with the External Affairs Ministry.

The Association claimed that it had been peacefully lodging its protest here by demonstrating during lunch hour since November 27 without affecting the normal working of the office. It has demanded an apology from the official.
