`More young Indians prone to stroke'

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Stroke or brain attack is the third leading cause of death in India and over one per cent of the country's population has already suffered a stroke as Indians are more prone to it than their Western counterparts, claimed doctors at the Institute of Neurosciences in Max Super Speciality Hospital here on Wednesday.

"Not just this, the age at which a person might suffer a stroke has come down considerably in the past decade and more and more young Indians are now prone to a brain attack," they added.

"Over one per cent of the Indian population has had a stroke. It is not just the third leading cause of death in the country, but also one of the most common causes of long-term disability than any other disease," said Dr. J.D. Mukherji, Senior Consultant and Stroke Neurologist at the hospital.
