`Corruption preventing action'

Govt. confessed power situation bad: BJP

NEW DELHI: Accusing the Delhi Government of having failed to provide a stable and efficient power regime even four-and-a-half years after privatisation, senior BJP leaders on Wednesday alleged that "corruption" in the privatisation process was preventing the Delhi Government from taking any punitive action against the private power companies.

Reacting to the decision to summon the heads of the private power distribution companies over the deteriorating power situation, Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan said the Government itself had confessed that the situation was very bad. The Delhi Cabinet was completely divided over the matter. Power Minister Haroon Yusuf had also conceded officially that things were not under control and the power companies were taking the people of Delhi for a ride, he added.

"Mr. Yusuf had recently confessed in one of his letters to the MLAs that the power companies were indulging in fraud by sending inflated bills, installing fast running meters, undertaking unscheduled power cuts and failure to provide a proper redress mechanism for consumers of the city. This clearly indicates that situation on the power front is poor and the Government is watching the situation silently," Dr. Vardhan added.

Accusing the Government of protecting the interests of the private companies at the cost of the common man, Dr. Vardhan said that even RWAs and now the Ministers of the Delhi Government were up in arms against the terror unleashed by these private companies.

Former Union Minister and BJP leader Vijay Goel said it was unfortunate that when the people of Delhi were suffering both mentally and financially due to the misdeeds of the power companies, the Delhi Government was claiming success on the power reforms front.

Mr. Goel demanded that the MoU signed with the discoms be reviewed and if need be these companies be shown the door.

"Subsidy and tax payers money has gone down the drain. People continue to suffer long hours of power cuts."
