CHENNAI:
The State Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) on Wednesday arrested two persons in connection with cases relating to cheating of building contractors by the head of a trust in Vellore and his associates.
Two cars, cash totalling Rs.1.13 lakh, four television sets and documents pertaining to landed property of 175 acres were among those seized, a CB-CID official said.
The allegation was that Yobu Saravanan, who started the trust, had told contractors that he proposed to build houses for poor people free of cost out of funds from abroad. He entered into an agreement with them, collecting Rs.2,000 for a house as deposit. Totally, he collected Rs.12 crore. From the money collected, he gave a portion to others who brought the contractors. Three persons who had given money to Saravanan preferred a complaint with the Chennai City Central Crime Branch and the first case was registered in August this year. Two more cases were registered later and the city police arrested three persons and recovered Rs.10,500 in cash, a car and a motorcycle. The three cases were later transferred to the CB-CID last month. Within a month of the transfer, the special unit arrested Saravanan and a trust member, Rajendran, the official said.
