CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday adjourned sine die after a short session of four days. — Special Correspondent

Child labour rescued from industrial units

Hosur: Four children were rescued from industrial units here on Thursday. Acting on instructions from Collector Santhosh Babu, a team led by Sub-Collector Anand Kumar and Inspector of Factories Muralidharan raided industrial establishments in SIPCOT 1 and 2.

The team found the children working in automobile and welding workshops.

They were rescued and admitted to special schools after a medical check-up. Action has been initiated against the owners who had employed the children. — Staff Reporter

VAT will bring down prices, says Chamber

CHENNAI: Prices of several commodities will come down under the Value Added Tax regime, scheduled to come into force from January 1, according to the Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Thanking Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for getting the Assembly nod for the VAT Bill, chamber president S. Rethinavelu said additional sales tax, surcharge and additional surcharge, that were instrumental for price escalation, would be scrapped.

He said a meeting, under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, should be convened immediately to discuss all issues across the table and finalise the rules under the VAT Act. — Special Correspondent

Re. 1 and Rs. 2 legal tender: RBI

CHENNAI: The Reserve Bank of India has reminded the public that Re.1 and Rs. 2 notes are still legal tender and continue to be in circulation.

They should be accepted and exchanged.

The reminder comes after a complaint that people and shops in some parts of Tamil Nadu are not accepting these notes. — Staff Reporter

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank has new MD

CHENNAI: G. Narayana Moorthy, a banker with 35 years work experience in public sector banks, assumed charge as managing director and chief executive officer of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank on December 1. According to a press release, the Reserve Bank of India had approved his appointment for two years. Mr. Moorthy served Canara Bank for 30 years in various positions and Indian Overseas Bank for five years as general manager and chief vigilance officer. — Special Correspondent

Meet on `Auto SCM India 2006'

CHENNAI: The Institute of Logistics of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is organising `Auto SCM India 2006' conference and exposition here on December 12 and 13. The conference will focus on supply chain management as a strategic differentiator and a key value driver for the automotive industry.

Some of the issues to be deliberated include global trends in automotive supply chain and challenges in supply chain management in outbound logistics and after market operations and export marketing. Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy will inaugurate the event. — Special Correspondent

Free neuro camp

ERODE: A free neuro medical camp would be conducted on December 10 at Pallipalayam Krishnaveni Government HSS, said the president of the Lions Club of Pallipalayam Central P.K.R. Samarajan on Thursday. It would be conducted by Lions Club of Pallipalayam Central along with Lotus Hospitals, Kollampalayam, Milka Wonder Cake and Indas Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Ahmedabad.

Rice bags seized

SALEM: Police seized 21 bags of rice meant for distribution under the Public Distribution System (PDS) and arrested four persons for smuggling the rice in Ammapet here on Thursday. During a vehicle check on Attur Road, the police personnel intercepted a van and found the bags of rice in it. They arrested Selvaraj (28) Seenivasan (24), residents of Minnampalli, Krishnan (35) and Selvam (25), residents of Ammapet. - Staff Reporter

Mobile phones, accessories stolen

SALEM: Unidentified men stole mobile phones and accessories worth Rs. 2.75 lakh and cash Rs. 25,000 from a shop near the New Integrated Bus stand here on Wednesday night. Police said the owner Senthilkumar found the asbestos sheets of the shop broke open and mobile phones, accessories and cash missing on Thursday.

Killed in accident

SANKAGIRI: A 29-year-old man was killed and another sustained injuries when a private bus hit their motorcycle here on Wednesday night. The police said Venugopal (29) and his relative Raja (32) were on their way to Tiruchengode, when the accident took place. They were admitted to the Erode Government hospital, where Venugopal died.

SALEM: Three persons of a family were found dead in their house at Narasothipatti on Thursday. Police said Jayaprakash (32), an auto driver and his wife Sathya had consumed poison after killing their son Santhosh (3) on Wednesday night.

Thanjavur: More than 900 unemployed youth from Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts participated in the job fair conducted by Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) National College here on Wednesday.

ING VYSYA, Bajaj Allianz, Chola Mandalam, HDFC and Reliance from insurance sectors, Reliance Communications, Kotak Securities, TGS Electronics and Sri Ram group of companies participated. S.P. Antonysamy, Managing Director of Hotel Parisutham, inaugurated the fair. Praveen Kumar, Consultant, ICFAI National College, Head Office, Hyderabad, Johnson Sangeetharaj, Principal of ICFAI National College, participated.

Demonstration

KARUR: Over 100 persons belonging to various political parties staged a demonstration here on Thursday condemning the desecration of Periyar statue at Srirangam.

The CP district secretary, M. Rathinam, led the demonstration in front of the taluk office here in which the DMK district secretary, Vasuki Murugesan, party weavers' wing secretary Paramathi Shanmugam, Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam district president Dhanapal, Dravidar Kazhagam district president M.K. Rajasekaran, town secretary Selvaraj participated.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 113.17 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 4,487 cusecs and the discharge 15,000 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Woman attacks spouse

Tuticorin: The police are on the look out for Valliammal (50) on a charge of assaulting her husband with a sickle over a family dispute, at Alwarthirunageri on Wednesday.

Velumuthu, who as injured in the attack, was admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College and Hospital.

Man killed in road accident

Tuticorin: A 38-year-old man was fatally knocked down by an unidentified vehicle at Meignanapuram near here on Wednesday.

The police said V. Edward was walking along Nainarpathu Road, when he was hit by the vehicle from behind. He was killed on the spot.
