CPI (M) retains seat

KOLKATA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has retained the Islampur Assembly seat in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district, the by-election for which was held on December 4.

Sayeeda Farhat Afroz won the seat defeating her closest Trinamool Congress candidate, Chaudhury Abdul Karim, by 7,511 votes. The Congress nominee came a distant third. Commenting on the result, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said: "It is a verdict of the people in favour of our Government's policies."
