"No opposition to local body officials exercising powers"

Special Correspondent

Puducherry: The president of Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee P. Shanmugham has said no one can stand in the way of the members of the newly elected municipal bodies exercising powers as recognised by the Constitution. Addressing newspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Shanmugham, said the Municipal legislations adopted by the Government now had inbuilt provisions to grant powers to the local bodies. He said the forthcoming session of the Assembly (slated to begin on December 15) would also bring in amendments to the municipal legislations to earmark subjects to the village panchayats.

He said that three nominated legislators would soon be appointed for the territorial Assembly and one of them would be a woman.
