Plea for Sainik colony in Vellore

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: Brigadier P.K. Nandagopal, a retired army officer, has appealed for a Sainik colony in Vellore, along with the proposed Kendriya Vidyalaya (central school).

Participating in the Flag Day celebrations organised by the Directorate of Ex-Servicemen's Welfare and the district administration here on Thursday, the Maha Vir Chakra awardee said Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav had agreed to provide a site for the construction of a building for the proposed Kendriya Vidyalaya school. If a Sanik colony was located close by, it would facilitate easy implementation of the schemes for the welfare of the ex-servicemen of the Vellore district, he said. Mr. Nandagopal hoped that the `one rank one pension' policy would soon be implemented for retired defence personnel.

District Revenue Officer A. Suganthi distributed the Governor's commendation certificates, the Chief Secretary's commendation certificates and medals to government officials for their achievements in fund raising for the Flag Day fund. Ms. Suganthi also distributed financial assistance to the dependents of deceased defence personnel and marriage assistance to the daughters of ex-servicemen.

T.P.K. Sundaram, Assistant Director of Ex-Servicemen's Welfare, Vellore, said the Ex-Servicemen's Complex comprising the defence canteen and hospital, under construction on a site near the VIT University, would be ready in two months. Earlier in the morning, the Collectorled a procession from the Town Bus Stand through the Officers' Line and mobilised contributions from traders in Sarathi Mansions for the Flag Day Fund.
