NEW DELHI: Chairman of the Railway Board J.P. Batra has been elected Chairman of the International Union of Railways (UIC), a Paris-based world organisation for international cooperation among railways and promotion of rail transport mode.

Mr. Batra is the first non-European to be elected to the post, an official release said adding that the new UIC would focus on the development of intercontinental freight corridors, cooperation within the metre gauge, broad gauge groups and conduct interactive seminars between customers (railways) and suppliers (world industry).
