Beijing: China said on Thursday supporters of the Dalai Lama should stop attempts at ``splitting the motherland'' if they cared about the future of Tibet. ``Tibet is part of China from ancient history. No country in the world recognises Tibet as an independent state,'' Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said. It was the first Chinese response to an appeal by the Dalai Lama's top envoy Lodi Gyari for a solution to the Tibetan issue. ``If they do care about the future of Tibet, they should stop their activities splitting the motherland and give up their attempts for Tibetan independence,'' he said while responding to a statement by the envoy, who warned of potential instability in Tibet unless the issue is resolved before the lifetime of the Dalai Lama. Mr. Qin described the situation in the Tibet Autonomous Region as ``stable.'' PTI
