Scholarship scheme for students on the anvil

Staff Reporter

Aimed at promoting social sciences

KOLLAM: Education Minister M.A. Baby has said that a scheme to identify outstanding students and award them scholarships to pursue higher education is under consideration of the Government.

Inaugurating, the year-long golden jubilee of the Post Graduate and Research Department of Political Science attached to SN College here, Mr. Baby said the scheme basically intended to promote all subjects especially social sciences.

He said even now it was unfortunate that talent was identified only when it was late. The scholarship scheme aimed at identifying talent at the right time and promoting it from then on.

"It is a shame to note that parents are grooming their children only for the purpose of becoming doctors, engineers or management professionals. For achieving it, they are prepared to invest any amount of money. In the process, there is a general reluctance to study social science subjects," he said.

The Minister said the Government was taking all steps to increase the standard of primary and public education in the State.

The tendency of allowing market forces to decide on the course and needs of the education sector would only ruin the quality of education.

The Government was of the opinion that the higher education sector required a total overhauling. It was for the purpose that a Higher Education Commission with Dr. K.N. Panikkar as chairman had been constituted.

The function was presided over by college Principal S.V. Sudheer. The former principal of the college P. Vijayaraghavan, Deputy Mayor of Kollam Veliyam Rajan and treasurer of the SN Trusts G. Jayadevan spoke.
