Sporting Clube records win

KOLKATA: Goan league champion Sporting Clube de Goa took a firm step towards qualifying for the semifinals of the IFA Shield football tournament here at the Salt Lake Stadium beating Kolkata league champion Kingfisher East Bengal 1-0. Captain Dudu Omagbemi headed home in the 58th minute.

East Bengal overcame some initial dominance of Sporting Clube de Goa and eased the pressure on the defence by taking charge of the mid-field but failed to open up in the first half. The second session began brilliantly for East Bengal as S. Malswantluanga, coming in as a substitute, put a terrific cross from right and Brazilian Thiago's shot rocked the bar. Sporting Clube de Goa recovered from the shock and took charge of the proceedings which culminated in Dudu's goal off a flag kick. The two stoppers of East Bengal stood rooted to their position as Dudu rose above and met the perfect cross with a firm head for the match-winner. — Special Correspondent
