Basketball
BANGALORE: Sports Hostel (Bangalore) ousted Hindustan Aeronautics Sports Club (HASC) with a 78-74 victory in the quarterfinals of the Association Cup basketball tournament. Played at the Indoor stadium and watched by NBA officials, Srinivas Naik and Rangan Gowda combined to wreak havoc on the HASC defence to pull off a stunning victory. Thanks to Sanjay Raj and Rajkumar, HASC took the early initiative and even led 38-31 at the halfway stage. But the game changed in the second session as the much younger and fitter Hostelites combined better to find the hoop consistently. With a minute and fifteen seconds remaining, Sports Hostel led 73-70. HASC then converted through Yasin and Sachindra to lead 74-73. However, Srinivas Naik converted a three-pointer and then Ajmal converted a fast break to seal victory for the Hostelites. This is for the first time in many years that the former champions, HASC have failed to advance into the semifinals. The other teams to make it to the semifinals were Vijaya Bank, MEG and ASC. In the women's section, IBBC, Sports Hostel (Mysore), JSC and Vivek's all entered the last four. The results: Men: Sports Hostel (Bangalore) 78 (Srinivas Naik 35, Rangan Gowda 18, Rabanni 11, Ajmal 10) bt HASC 74 (Sachindra 28, Rajkumar 18, Sanjay Raj 14) (Ht: 31-38); Vijaya Bank 54 (Basavaraj 13, Ronnie 10) bt NAL 35 (Venkat 11) (Ht: 28-14); ASC 58 (Dharampal 16) bt Ambedkar SC 31 (Nikith 10) (Ht: 31-16); MEG 43 (Manoj 11) bt Kanaka (Kolar) 30 (Ramkrishna 13) (Ht: 23-11).
