Siddaramaiah congratulated

Bangalore: Various political parties have congratulated Siddaramaiah on his victory in the Chamundeshwari byelection.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) called it a "victory for the secular forces." It was a sign that those who collude with communal forces would be defeated by the people, the party said in a press release.

The Republican Party of India (RPI) said the credit for the victory should go to the RPI and other pro-Dalit organisations that worked for the cause of secular forces.

In a press release, the Kannada Chaluvali Horata Samiti and the Karnataka Workers' Union said that the enormous sums of money spent in the byelection was a "dangerous development". They have sought Mr. Deve Gowda's expulsion from the JD(S). — Special Correspondent

Former BSNL official gets jail term

BANGALORE: The 32nd Additional City Civil and Sessions and Special Judge for CBI cases, A.L. Pujar, has convicted S. Thimmaraja of corruption. The official, as a Junior Telecom Officer, BSNL, Jagalur Telephone Exchange, Davangere, was found to have amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The assets amounted to Rs. 4,14,894.

He was sentenced to undergo simple imprisonment for two years and pay a fine of Rs. 10,000, and to undergo simple imprisonment for another six months if he failed to pay the fine.

Conference on IT and Defence

Bangalore: The Computer Society of India (CSI) will hold a national conference on `Information Technology's Role in Defence,' here, on December 13 and 14.

CSI chairman C.R. Chakravarthy told presspersons here on Thursday that the conference would focus on how information technology plays a vital role in the present-day battlefield scenario.

V.K. Atre, former scientific adviser to the Defence Ministry and director-general of DRDO, will inaugurate the conference.

Farmers launch dharna for substation

BIJAPUR: Farmers from villages along the banks of the Bhima have launched an indefinite dharna at Hirebevanur in Indi taluk seeking the setting up of a 110-kV substation there.

They also want Shivakumar Sugars Pvt. Ltd. to buy sugarcane at Rs. 1,200 a tonne, which is the price being offered by many factories in the region. The factory is offering Rs. 1,000 a tonne. — Staff Correspondent

Disbursal of teachers' salaries

BANGALORE: The Bangalore University College Teachers' Association, which had approached the Director of the Treasury to disburse salaries to teaching and non-teaching staff on the first of the month, has said that following a discussion with the Director of Collegiate Education, the salary for November was released on December 1

Association president K.G. Lokesh said that during a discussion on the subject last month it was suggested that salaries could be disbursed on the first of the month if principals and managements of aided colleges submitted salary grant bills with all documents to the Joint Director or Collegiate Education before the 15th of every month. — Staff Reporter

Results of written test announced

HASSAN: The marks and other details of candidates who appeared for the written test for the post of police constables, woman police constables and reserve police constables on October 29, are displayed on the notice board at the District Police Office in Hassan, according to a press release from the Hassan Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane.

Three-day festival at math

BELLARY: A three-day "dasotsava" and "kalotsava", organised by the Bangalore-based Kanakagiri Lalitakala Sangha, will begin from Friday evening at the Sri Raghavendra Math open-air theatre at Satyanarayan Pet here.

The programmes include both religious discourses and cultural events, including Yakshagana, bhajans and dasavani. B. Sriramulu, Minister for Tourism and Textiles, will inaugurate the function on Friday evening.

Chornur Kotrappa, Assistant Director Kannada and Culture, will be the chief guest and Mattihalli Nagaraja Rao, senior journalist, will preside.

Chit fund unit set up

DAVANGERE: The Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL), a State Government undertaking, which started a chit funds business to diversify its activities last year, set up a chit fund office in Davangere on Thursday. Ramakanth Hebballi, general manager, MSIL, (in charge of chit funds) told presspersons here that the MSIL had introduced the chit fund business to provide safe and secure chit funds to people. He said MSIL would operate its unit according to the provisions of Chit Funds Act of 1982 . — Staff Corresponden

MYSORE: Mahajan First Grade College observed the 50th death anniversary (Mahanirvana Day) of Babasaheb Amebdkar on the college premises on Wednesday. College principal K.V. Prabhakara delivered a special lecture on the life and achievements of Ambedkar.

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Owing to work on charging underground power cable network the following areas in Hubli will have no power supply on Friday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a release.

The areas affected are Toravi Galli, Rudrakshi Math, CBT Killa, Shaw Bazar and surrounding areas. — Staff Correspondent

Exporters advised

PANAJI: M. Kumar, regional manager (West) of Export Credit and Guarantee Corporation (ECGC), has advised exporters, particularly of ores and minerals to China, to be careful in selection of their buyers, even if they had a Letter of Credit (L/C), and exhorted them to cover their export payments under a suitable ECGC policy. Arrested

BANGALORE: The Lokayukta police caught Ramesh Shiddappa Hittangi, community affairs officer, City Municipal Council, Bailhongal, Belgaum. He was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 400 from a complainant. The accused was arrested and produced before the Sessions Judge. The accused had allegedly demanded the bribe to grant permission to the complainant to build a house at plot number 10 and 11 at Dharwad bypass road, property owned by the complainant and his brother, a release said.

SBI launches scheme

BELGAUM: State Bank of India has launched its SBI Mutual Fund's latest scheme "One India Fund" in the city on Tuesday. According to a release quoting M.K. Krishna, SBI Mutual Fund's SBI Channel in-charge, Bangalore issued here on Thursday, the new product was a close-ended scheme with automatic conversion into open-ended scheme after three-year tenor.
