UNITED NATIONS: United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed India's Atul Khare his special representative for Timor-Leste and head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste. Mr. Khare replaces Sukehiro Hasegawa of Japan, whose appointment expired on September 30, says the U.N. announcement made on Wednesday. The new envoy served with the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor from June 2002 till its completion in May 2005, first as chief of staff and later as deputy special representative of the Secretary-General.
