THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said that CPI(M) candidate George M. Thomas' victory in the Thiruvambady Assembly byelection shows that the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is still ahead of the Opposition UDF in the State. Mr. Vijayan, addressing a news conference immediately after the result of the byelection became known, also acknowledged the role played by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and its leader K. Karunakaran in the LDF win. "Although the NCP had decided to campaign independently for the LDF, many of its workers were part of the LDF campaign. There were also many who campaigned independently for the LDF candidate's victory. At the end, Karunakaran also came to canvass votes for the LDF," he said. He disagreed with CPI State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan's observation that there was erosion in minority votes this time from the LDF's side and said the CPI leader might have said so because of some misunderstanding. The UDF leadership, he said, did try to `mislead the voters with baseless propaganda' about the LDF's stand towards minorities in general and Christian religious heads in particular. Asked to comment on the fall in LDF's share of votes , Mr. Vijayan said the issue should be seen against the backdrop of the serious bid put up by the UDF to wrest the seat back .
