A warning, says Achuthanandan

Special Correspondent

Low margin of victory Says speedy action needed against corruption

Achuthanandan says his stand against entry of DIC(K) into the LDF has only been strengthened by the election result.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan takes the low margin victory for the Left Democratic Front from Thiruvambadi constituency as a warning to his Government.

The Chief Minister told journalists here on Thursday that Government needed to speed up action against corruption and improve efficiency.

Contradicting party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, Mr. Achuthanandan said the merger of Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) with the National Congress Party and their independent campaign in favour of the LDF had not helped the LDF. "We feel that the people have not taken kindly of the merger," he said.

Replying to a question, the Chief Minister added that his stand against entry of Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) into the LDF had only been strengthened by the election results.

Noting that it was a creditable victory, he said that voters of Thiruvambadi had rejected the propaganda of the UDF against the Government. However, it appeared that the people wanted the Government to act fast in matters such as encroachment on Government land and corruption by functionaries of previous Government. He denied that the minorities had moved away from the LDF. Most could see through the propaganda of the Opposition in matters such as the enactment of Kerala Professional College or Institutions Act.

Police action flayed

Replying to a question, he said that the police action against mediapersons at the counting centre was undemocratic. The stand of the Election Commission in such matters was unjust and this would be taken up with the Commission.

Mr. Achuthanandan recalled that the Election Observer had forced him to return to Thiruvananthapuram from Delhi after talks on the Mullapperiyar issue though he wanted to go directly to Kozhikode. So, he had to fly to Thiruvananthapuram and then leave for Thiruvambadi by train.

After his campaign in the constituency was concluded, he had two days' programmes in Kannur. However, the Commission wanted him to return to Thiruvananthapuram before proceeding to Kannur
