`It is a victory for secularism'

Staff Correspondent

Weakness of the coalition Government has been exposed, says Veerbhadrappa

BELLARY: Allum Veerbhadrappa, former president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee and former Minister, termed the victory of the party candidate Siddaramaiah in the byelection to the Chamundeshwari Assembly segment as a "victory for secularism and democracy".

Offering his reaction, Mr. Veerbhadrappa told presspersons here on Thursday that the outcome of the byelection had not only made the Congress stronger but also exposed the failure of the Janata Dal (S) and BJP coalition Government in the State.

"People have taught the Janata Dal (S) and its leaders, including H.D. Deve Gowda and Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy a lesson for throwing to winds principles of secularism and joining hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

"In a way it is the defeat of Janata Dal (S) president Deve Gowda and Chief Minister H.D. Kumarswamy. At least now, let them sever ties with the BJP and announce fresh elections in the State." Mr. Veerbhadrappa did not wish to attach much importance to the low victory margin stating that Mr. Siddaramaiah had won against Mr. Deve Gowda and Chief Minister Kumaraswamy.

"In fact the courage of Mr. Siddaramaiah needs to be admired," he said.

Mr. Veerbhadrappa said the results of the byelection had enthused party workers across the State, including Bellary.

He said efforts would continue to organise and strengthen the party here with all leaders touring the district and also exposing the failures of the coalition Government.
