Congress jubilant over victory in Chamundeshwari

Staff Correspondent

Janata Dal (S) leaders refuse to speak about the party's performance

  • `It is a victory for the people of Chamundeshwari'
  • Congress predicts change in political scenario soon

HASSAN: Hassan, the home district of Janata Dal (S) president and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Public Works Minister H.D. Revanna, wore a deserted look even as the Congress camp here was celebrating its victory in the bypoll. Most of the Janata Dal (S) leaders are in Mysore, and local Janata Dal (S) leaders refused to speak about the party's performance.

    Political scenario

Former Rajya Sabha Member and senior Congress MLC K.C. Kondaiah described the victory as the victory of people of Chamundeswari who gave a verdict despite money and liquor being provided by the Janata Dal (S). Former Minister and senior Congress leader from Hassan Gandsi MLA Shivaramu said the election result would change the political scenario in the State including in Hassan district.

    `Victory of principles'

This was a victory of the principles of the Congress. The corruption, misuse of official machinery and flow of money were all rejected by people in a silent revolution, he added.

Senior leader Bangaru Shivasiddappa described the victory as the victory of peoples who made a silent revolution without bloodshed and proved that money and muscle power were not issues.

Ganesh, a local youth, said election observer Peter Raymond prevented Chamundeswari from becoming another Bihar.

Chigateri Chandrasekhar Bhat welcomed the victory of the Congress and added that money and liquor could not decide elections.

Petty shop owner Manjunath More felt that the Janata Dal (S) fielded a right candidate. He said it was unfortunate that despite the Chief Minister's efforts, the party lost the seat.

He felt there would be no political repercussion in State.

Basavaraj and Range Gowda, both retired officers, said Siddaramiah's victory was the people's victory.
