Resolve hoardings issue: High Court

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has directed the Delhi Chief Secretary to hold a meeting with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner, the Northern Railway General Manager, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Managing Director and others to solve the issue of putting up hoardings on DMRC and Railway bridges at crossings on Ring Road.

Justice Gita Mittal of the High Court passed the direction on a bunch of petitions by Delhi Waste Management, Pioneer Publicity Corporation and Shalimar Advertisers challenging a November 27 notification of the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Delhi Government banning hoardings at the above-mentioned public places as they come in the way of smooth flow of traffic by causing distraction to drivers.

The petitioners submitted that they had been allowed to put up hoardings at these places through a tender process and the MCD had collected huge amounts from them.

Ms. Justice Mittal directed the Chief Secretary to convene the meeting within six weeks and file a report about the decision to the Court on February 5, 2007. Others directed by the Court to participate in the meeting are the NDMC chief, DCP Traffic, DDA vice-chairman, Transport Secretary of the Delhi Government and DTC chairman.
