`Rae Bareli suffering under U.P.Govt.'

"I am continuing Indira Gandhi's unfinished task"

UNCHAHAR (RAE BARELI): United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday fired another salvo at the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government, blaming it for slowing down industrial development in Rae Bareli, what with delay in clearance of land required for expansion of an automobile research centre in Lalganj.

Ms. Gandhi said a Rs. 1,500-crore investment was proposed in the Maitriye project but the State Government was yet to hand over land. She had written to the Chief Minister,urging him to expedite the land clearance formalities. The issue of land clearance for the automobile centre, which comprises a motor testing unit, paint shop and a research centre, has been hanging fire for the past three years.

Ms. Gandhi said she was continuing the unfinished task of the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who had made a significant contribution for the industrial development of Rae Bareli. After Indira Gandhi, it had become synonymous with industrial sickness and zero development.

Ms. Gandhi was dedicating five 210-MW units of the Unchahar superpower thermal station of the National Thermal Power Corporation to the nation here.

Power availability was the main problem area in Rae Bareli but with the commissioning of the Unchahar plant not only her constituency but the rest of the State would be assured of supply, Ms. Gandhi said. A Rs. 10,000-crore rail coach factory would be set up in Dalmau. It would have an installed capacity for manufacturing 1,500 coaches a year, and also open up new job opportunities for locals.

The Lucknow-Rae Bareli-Allahabad highway was proposed to be upgraded national highway. A Cabinet notification was already issued. A unit of the National Institute of Fashion Technology would be set up soon. Admissions would begin next year. On irrigation problems in six development blocks of her constituency, Ms. Gandhi recalled that Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz had visited the area and said a package for revival of the Sharda canal system would be announced soon.
