Bankers' action plan prepared

HASSAN: Canara Bank the lead bank in Hassan district has prepared the bankers annual action plan in consultation with NABARD for 2007-08. The plan outlay has been raised from Rs. 696.25 crore (2006-07) to Rs. 866.16 crore for 2007-08.

Hassan has a population of 17.22 lakh of which 14.17 lakh people live in rural areas. The literacy per cent is 68.75 and the net sown area is 3.74 lakh hectare with 20.5 per cent under irrigation. The major food crops are paddy, ragi, maize and potato and commercial crops are coffee, pepper, cardamom, coconut, sugarcane and tobacco. Coffee is grown on 34,290 hectares. With this as the background, the bankers annual action plan was prepared. There are 206 bank branches in the district.

The district has good potential for plantation and horticulture crops, aromatic plants and dairy activities.

Release

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer F.R. Jamaadar, released the bankers annual action plan at a recent meeting held in Canara Bank's regional office.
