Northeast monsoon may revive next week

Increased rainfall activity likely by Sunday

CHENNAI:
There may be a revival of northeast monsoon by the beginning of next week.
A senior meteorologist with the weather department says a perusal of different global forecasting models including those of the National Centre for Medium Range Forecasting (NCMRF) reveals that a low pressure wave, presently located near the Andamans, is moving westwards and this may lead to an increased rainfall activity by Sunday.
Most likely, coastal areas will receive showers though a few interior parts of the State are also likely to be covered.
For nearly two weeks, the State experienced either isolated rainfall or dry weather. Last time, the fairly widespread rain over Tamil Nadu was recorded on November 22-23. In December, the State normally receives five to eight cm of rain. For the week ending December 6, most of the districts recorded scanty rainfall.
Not unusual
Noting that prolonged dry spells are not unusual during the northeast monsoon, the meteorologist says there is at least one spell that the State will experience this month. From October 1 to December 6, the State received 470 mm rainfall against the normal 376 mm, a departure of 25 per cent.
