What's with the `jaalra'?

What made man invent the `jaalra' (cymbals)?

Inaugurating a music festival in Chennai the other day, V. Irai Anbu, Tourism Secretary, spoke about how music was part of human life, and how loving and enjoying music can elevate the human soul to a sublime level.

Saying that people should be one with nature, he pointed out that by observing various facets of nature such as sea waves and bamboos man developed various musical instruments.

But, he wondered, what prompted man to develop the `jaalra'?

At this, the audience broke into a spontaneous round of applause and laughter.
