MANGALORE: The State Government was examining a proposal to extend financial support to Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) in the construction of a second vented dam at Thumbay near Mangalore, announced Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. Mr. Yediyurappa told presspersons here on Thursday it was a shame that a city as resourceful as Mangalore was suffering from drinking water problems. He said he was disappointed at the MCC's lacklustre attitude towards the provision of the required "seed money" for taking up the Thumbay project. He said the Government was considering paying the entire amount of Rs. 40 crore for constructing the vented dam. The Deputy Chief Minister said he had received information from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) as well as from the State National Highways that the four-laning work on National Highways 17 and 48 between Suratkal and B.C. Road was in progress and the damaged sections of Shirady Ghat on National Highway 48 were being repaired at a cost of Rs. 30 crore. Expressing concern over the current law and order situation in Mangalore and parts of Dakshina Kannada, Mr. Yediyurappa said that while he agreed that the setting up of police commissioner's office needed to be done at the earliest, the existing police system too needed to be strengthened on all fronts, including weaponry, infrastructure, appointments, vehicles and general facilities.
