THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac has stressed the need for participatory resource mapping at the grassroots-level to ensure sustainable development. He was inaugurating an international conference on `b-GIS@India' organised by the Department of Geology, University of Kerala, here on Thursday. The use of Geographic Information System (GIS) is particularly needed for micro-watershed management. Watersheds that are being developed and maintained across the State should be mapped using GIS technologies so that their benefits reach the people, Dr. Isaac said. He said confusion prevailed over the baseline document for decentralised planning. Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university V. Jayaprakas presided over the inaugural function. Executive vice-president of the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment A.E. Muthunayagam and head of the department V. Prasannakumar were among those who participated.
