Staff Reporter
Thiruvananthapuram: The Rural police on Thursday arrested two persons in connection with 12 recent temple theft cases in the district. The accused were identified as Sudeevan, 56, and `Kuruki' Chandran. The police said they have recovered gold ornaments and other temple property valued at more than Rs.1 lakh from the accused. The recovered loot included 98 gold `tilaks' deposited as offerings by devotees. The burglaries at Sarkara Devi Temple and Azhoor Maha Ganapathy temple have been traced back to the accused, said the police. Circle Inspector (Attingal) K. Rajendran said the accused were history-sheeters with a long record of breaking into religious places of worship. They often targeted temples without security guards in the vicinity of the State and National Highways in Attingal police sub-division. The reported burglaries had taken place between 12 a.m. and 1.30 a.m. He said the accused used chisels and crowbars to pry open temple doors. The implements used for committing the thefts have been recovered from the accused, Mr. Rajendran said. The police said they were on the look out for three more persons of the same gang.
